Wellington Magistrates Court
The Neighbourhood Justice Centre, which includes the local Magistrates Court and Children’s Court, is located at 241 Wellington Street in Collingwood, near Johnston Street and beside the Tote Hotel.
Your criminal matter will be listed at the Neighbourhood Justice Centre at first instance if the alleged offending conduct occurred in Collingwood or the surrounding suburbs. If your matter resolves as a plea of guilty, you may apply for your matter to be transferred into a court closer to where you reside.
The Magistrates Court is the court where all criminal matters involving adults commence. It is also the court that hears summary criminal matters including traffic offences, as well as family violence and personal safety intervention order applications. While the Magistrates Court deals with criminal matters where the accused is aged 18 or older, the Children’s Court (located on the first floor of the same building) deals with criminal matters where the accused is under 18, intervention order applications where the respondent is under 18 and child protection matters.
If you have a matter in the Neighbourhood Justice Centre, make sure you arrive at court well before the time your matter is listed to be heard. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed and you should come prepared to be at court for most of the day.
The Neighbourhood Justice Centre does not have dedicated court parking. It is generally recommended that the court be accessed using public transport (South Morang & Hurstbridge train lines or Tram Number 86) due to the very limited and restricted nature of parking in the City of Yarra. If you are attending court for traffic offences for which the court may impose a licence disqualification period, do not drive to court as you may not be permitted to drive home. If attending by car, it is recommended that you bring at least $10 in gold coins to enable metre parking, though it is likely you will have to renew your parking at least once while attending court on the day, depending on how long your appearance takes.
If attending the Neighbourhood Justice Centre for any matter, it is important that you make your appearance known immediately to the court coordinator on the first floor. The court coordinator can assist you with where to go to speak to the prosecution as well as letting you know which courtroom your matter will be heard in.
Taking the next step and contacting a lawyer can be scary. Our lawyers will make you feel comfortable so you can talk about your situation.
