Gympie Magistrates Court

The Gympie court registry is located on the ground floor, 38 Channon Street, Gympie. Both the Magistrates Court and the District Court sit at Gympie; however, the District Court only sits every two or three months for a two-week period during its circuit.

The original Gympie Courthouse is a heritage-listed building built in 1901. It is a single-story building with a corner tower and stone pillars flank the entrances on three sides. A large clock is placed in the tower. It is a town landmark and central to the government precinct in Channon Street.

Two separate buildings make up the Gympie Courts. The first is the heritage-listed building, where the District Court sits. The more modern building located next door is where the Registry and the Magistrate Court are located.

The Gympie Magistrates Court deals with criminal matters including traffic matters where the accused is an adult. It also deals with domestic violence order applications and civil matters. The Gympie Children’s Court sits once a month, dealing with criminal matters where the accused is under 18 and with domestic violence order applications where the respondent is under 18.

The Gympie Magistrates Court generally sits as follows:

  • Monday – general criminal law matters such as arrests and remands
  • Wednesday – civil court matters, such as QCAT matters and Domestic Violence Applications
  • Thursday – general call over, traffic matters, QCAT matters, other government department matters.

The Presiding Magistrate, Chief Magistrate Callaghan, usually opens the court at 9.30 am. Other visiting Magistrates will commence court by 9.00 am each day. It is important to check the law lists accessible on the Queensland Courts website the day before court and on the morning of court, to check what time your matter is listed that day. A unique practice of Presiding Magistrate Callaghan is to conduct all adjournments, represented or otherwise, before hearing any other matter.

The Gympie Courts also offer a local Justice of Peace (JP) service. A JP sits in the Registry of the Magistrates Court from Tuesday to Friday from 10.00 am until 1.00 pm.
