Newtown Local Court

The Newtown Local Court is located at 222 Australia Street, Newtown. It is next door to the police station and is accessible from Alton Lane.

The Local Court is the court where all criminal matters commence. It will hear cases about all kinds of criminal and traffic offenses, including Assaults, Domestic Violence, Drinking Driving, and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications.

Street parking is available but scarce and you should aim to arrive early and prepare to drive through narrow streets, many of which are one-way. Almost all of the street parking in Newtown is paid metred parking. You will most likely find yourself parking a few hundred metres away from the courthouse and you will probably need to regularly top up the parking metre. However, Newtown train station is only a five-minute walk to the courthouse and this is the easiest method of transportation. If you are attending court for traffic offences for which the court may impose a licence disqualification period, it is particularly important that you do not drive to court.

As you walk up the stairs to enter the court complex, you will see the court list pinned to a board towards your left. This will tell you which courtroom your matter will be mentioned in. There is almost always a court officer available to answer any questions you may have regarding the courthouse.

Newtown Local Court is a small but very busy court and it is important that you arrive early. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed and you should come prepared to be at court for most of the day.
