Ballina Court House

The Local Court is the court where all criminal matters involving adults commence. It is also the court that hears summary criminal matters, including traffic offences and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications. The Ballina Local Court sits as the Ballina Children’s Court for matters involving people under the age of 18. These are held in the same room as the Local Court, but anyone not connected with the case will be asked to leave when the court is sitting as the Children’s Court.

If you have a matter before the Ballina Local Court, make sure you arrive well before the time your matter is listed. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed and you should come prepared to be at court for several hours.

The doors to the Ballina Local Court typically open at 9 am. It is ideal to arrive about this time, to allow time to get through security (similar to what you might encounter at an airport, where you have to empty your pockets and place electronic devices in separate trays for security screening). Check the court lists once you arrive. If you are unsure about the courtroom your matter is in, ask someone in the Registry office.

The court list commences at 9:30 am.

If you are flying into Ballina, it is an 8-minute drive from the airport to the court. It is a bus ride of approximately 1 hour 7 minutes on route 640 from Byron Bay. There are also Ballina Town Services Buses which stop close to the court (Tamara Street, stop 60 on the map, approximately a 9 minute walk away from the court). If you are attending for a driving offence, for which there is risk you may be disqualified from holding your licence, it is particularly important that you do not drive to court.
