Sebastian De Brennan, Senior Criminal Defence Lawyer, has an interesting and varied legal background having worked at the Aboriginal Legal Service, a national law firm (where he acted for large corporates and insurers) and as a tipstaff to a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW. He has appeared in matters in the Local Court, District Court, Supreme Court and the ADT as well as sporting tribunals/judiciaries. He is admitted to practise in the High Court of Australia.
Since joining Armstrong Legal he has acted, or is acting, in a number of sizeable matters including those relating to murder, armed robbery; corporate fraud and larceny; a large scale cocaine importation matter; aggravated sexual assault involving a minor; assault occasioning grievous bodily harm; affray; malicious wounding; a child pornography case (involving the FBI and the Australian Federal Police); AVO matters as well as the full suite of traffic matters such as drink driving; drive while disqualified or suspended; drive furiously etc.
Sebastian also has experience as an advocate in defending freezing notice applications brought by the Crown and conducting bail applications, particularly those in the Supreme Court.
He was recently appointed to the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society of NSW, having served on the Human Rights Committee in 2009.
Outside of legal practice, Sebastian has lectured and tutored at UWS and the University of Notre Dame Australia; his research into access to justice and human rights has been published in various law journals.
As well as holding degrees in business and law (with First Class Honours), he is a graduate of the Sydney Leadership Program and a Graduate Fellow of the Asialink Program at the University of Melbourne. He has also completed a Masters in Law at the University of Cambridge where, amongst other subjects, he studied International Criminal Law.
Sebastian has a long standing interest in ensuring the full participation of youth in public policy. He is a former member of the federal government’s National Youth Roundtable and serves as a Consultative Committee Member at the Australian Clearing House for Youth Studies. This background in youth affairs equips him with a thorough understanding of the delicate issues associated with Children’s Court where required.
